Services provided by Leratong

The services offered are holistic and provided on the basis of the principle of “continuum of care” (from initial assessment and admission to end care). They include a whole range of services such as: material support, medical treatment, psycho-social services. Services are free and specifically targeting the members of our communities and within them a special focus is placed on the following direct beneficiaries: the terminally ill suffering from HIV/Aids and other chronic diseases, the elderly in need of care.

The services are directed to a very disadvantaged community, unable to access any other forms of services any where else. The services offered by the Leratong hospice are articulated around working partnership on the ground with Home based care teams, local clinics and hospitals. The services are of the highest professional standards, it is patient-centered, culturally relevant and sensitive.

The methodology used is recognized by the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa and incorporates elements of recognized local best practice, pastoral care and international practices.

The high quality of the services was recognized, amongst others, by MEDUNSA (Medical University of South Africa) who chose Leratong as a training site for their medical students to experience palliative care in action.
